What happens in a game

The game is an endless runner. The road has three lanes, and Tom runs forward on his own. Your whole job is to decide which lane he is in and whether he is on the ground, in the air or sliding underneath something. Roy the raccoon has stolen the gold, so the run is a chase, and gold bars appear along the way to be collected.

On a desktop, the left and right arrow keys switch lanes, the up arrow jumps and the down arrow slides. On a phone or tablet the same four moves are swipes: left or right to change lane, up to jump, down to slide. Poki lists both sets, so the game is meant to be played either way.

Vehicles and barriers come toward you, and they come closer together as the run speeds up. A collision usually ends the run, unless a pickup such as the Helmet is protecting you at that moment. Now and then Roy appears on a truck and throws obstacles and chilli bombs; this is a short boss phase in which the bombs can be knocked back.

Between runs, the gold you collected is spent on upgrading houses for Tom and his friends. Upgrades unlock characters such as Angela and Hank, and new worlds to run through. That progress layer is the reason a run is rarely wasted, even a short one.

Habits worth building

  1. 1Look ahead of Tom, not at him. The obstacle that ends a run is usually two or three steps up the road, and your eyes are better spent there.
  2. 2Make one clean move at a time. Switching two lanes in a single panicked gesture is a common way to clip a barrier on the way across.
  3. 3Keep the jump and the slide separate in your head: jump for things on the ground, slide for things overhead. Mixing them up is the classic early mistake.
  4. 4During Roy's truck phase, expect chilli bombs to arrive in your lane. The game lets you knock them back, so treat the phase as a timing task rather than something to flee from.
  5. 5If you are on a phone, make the swipes short and decisive. A long, slow drag can be read as a different move than you intended.

Who it fits

Players who want a quick reflex game with an obvious goal and no setup. It also fits anyone who enjoys collecting things toward upgrades, since the gold from each run feeds the progress between runs.

Downsides to know

  • Speed rises during a run, so a good start can still end suddenly. That is how the genre works, but it can feel abrupt if you expect long, calm sessions.
  • The game is hosted on Poki, a separate platform. Poki may show advertising around or before games, and we do not control it.
  • Upgrades and new characters are gated by the gold you collect, so seeing everything takes repeated runs. Poki does not give a figure for how many.
  • Poki does not list an age suitability for this game, so we have no rating to offer.
